About

Autism is a disability that can affect individuals in many different ways and severity may vary. Those who are affected are often sheltered from public view. Parents with children on the spectrum may be marginalized as a result. For a long time I was one of those parents. I decided to see what life would be like outside of the box and travel with my son who is on the autism spectrum. I knew it would not be easy since people with disabilities are not always well received. Children on the spectrum often have “behaviors” that are outside of the “typical” behaviors of society. Many do not understand that people on the autism spectrum are just like everyone else deep down inside but may not be able to express themselves the same way. Some people on the spectrum have sensitivities to lights, sounds and smells. These sensitivities may trigger behaviors or even meltdowns which are deemed unacceptable. I truly feel if people in the status quo were around people on the autism spectrum more often, they may understand the behaviors; and in turn if people on the spectrum were more understood, it may result in decreasing their anxiety and hopefully would in turn decrease many behaviors. My goal is to help introduce autism to society to foster acceptance of people who are different, but not less than anyone else on this earth!
